Foztráfego-Agência Marítima da Figueira Lda, Foztráfego

Foztráfego - Agência Marítima da Figueira, Lda. was founded on December 13th, 1973 and began operations on April 1st, 1974, aimed to develop its activity in the shipping agents and port operators sector. It was incorporated by the country's largest ship builder at the time, the Companhia Nacional de Navegação, and by a local agent, who subsequently transferred their shares to the Portline- Transportes Marítimos Internacionais, SA, today its majority shareholder, to the SeteShipping- Transportes Internacionais, SA and to the Setefrete-Tráfego e Cargas, SA.
Its initial capital was 500 escudos (about EUR 2,500) and is, today, of 250,000 euros.
In 1984, under the legislation then implemented on the assembling of ships, Foztráfego began to develop its business exclusively as a shipping agent, taking part in port operations in the loading and unloading sector, thus being subsumed in Operfoz - Operadores do Porto da Figueira da Foz, Lda., created for such purpose, and of which it owns one-third share of its capital.
In 1994, a company was incorporated to manage human resources, the Fozpor-Empresa de Trabalho Portuário da Figueira da Foz, ETP, Lda, in which it participates directly with a share of 20 percent and indirectly through Operfoz with 60 percent.
As shipping agents, Foztráfego, in addition to the port of Figueira da Foz, also operates in all national ports through the services provided by sub-agencies at the port of Aveiro, through a company it founded in 1990, the Sana-Sociedade de Agenciamento de Navios, Lda of which it holds 66.25% of its share capital.
Currently, and within the portfolio of all its holdings, the company holds equity that reaches about 870 thousand euros, a staff of 30 highly skilled employees in the sectors of transportation and movement of goods and recorded a total turnover of €5 million, in the aggregate of its subsidiaries in 2003 .
Foztráfego transacts in loading and unloading operations about 35 percent of the cargo moved in the commercial port of Figueira da Foz which was of 805 thousand tons in 2003, broken down in about 62 percent for exports and the 38 percent for imports. Operfoz, a holding company, is the largest operator in the port with 88.7 percent of the total movement and Foztráfego intervenes in most ships that dock in the port, thus being the largest shipping agency with about 70% of the total assemblage of ships.
One may say that, traditionally, the port of Figueira da Foz is a port of forest products (55 percent), with the paper companies in the county still moving about 52 per cent of the total operations.
The dry bulk, an increasingly growing area, has reached about 40 percent of the cargo movement in the port, which corresponds to about 325 thousand tons and, of these, 180 thousand are import and 145 thousand from export. Foztráfego holds a share of 68 percent in this area.
2003 was a crucial year in the port of Figueira da Foz due to the beginning of the use of the railway extension to receive paper pulp and containers for export by sea.

The Foztráfego has been a certified company since January 2001 and, currently, with standards ISO 9001:2000, NP EN ISO 9001:2000 and BS EN ISO 9001:2000 with general guidance for Total Quality Management and its priority and importance is the continuous improvement of its services.
